The Best Time to Mow Your Lawn in Utah (Herriman, Riverton & South Jordan)
Duck Duck Mow Team
March 2026
Why timing your mow matters in Utah
Utah's climate is unique — hot, dry summers and cold winters mean your lawn goes through dramatic seasonal changes. Mowing at the wrong time can stress your grass, invite weeds, and leave your yard looking patchy. After five years of mowing lawns across Herriman, Riverton, South Jordan, and Bluffdale, we've learned exactly when and how often to cut for the best results.
Spring (March – May): Wake Up Your Lawn
As temperatures warm up in March and April, cool-season grasses like Kentucky bluegrass (the most common lawn grass in our service areas) start actively growing again. This is the time to:
- Start mowing once grass reaches about 3–4 inches tall
- Keep your blade height at 2.5–3 inches — never cut more than one-third of the blade at once
- Mow weekly as growth accelerates through May
Spring is also the best time for a seasonal cleanup — clearing winter debris, re-edging beds, and getting your yard ready for summer. We offer spring cleanup packages for all neighborhoods in Herriman, Riverton, South Jordan, and Bluffdale.
Summer (June – August): Protect Against Heat Stress
Utah summers are brutal. In cities like Herriman and South Jordan, temperatures regularly hit 95–100°F. During peak summer:
- Raise your mowing height to 3–3.5 inches — taller grass shades the soil and retains moisture
- Mow in the early morning or evening, never during the hottest part of the day
- Bi-weekly mowing is often sufficient during dry spells when growth slows
- Leave clippings on the lawn — they return nitrogen to the soil
Our biweekly service ($45/visit) is perfect for summer when growth slows down and you want to save a little money without letting your yard get out of hand.
Fall (September – October): The Most Important Season
Fall is actually the most important season for lawn health in Utah. Cool temperatures and more moisture mean your grass is actively recovering from summer stress. Keep mowing weekly through October, and consider a fall cleanup to remove leaves before they smother your lawn over winter.
Winter (November – February): Let It Rest
Once temperatures drop consistently below 50°F, your lawn goes dormant. No mowing needed. Use this time to plan for spring — contact us to get on our schedule early, as spots in Herriman, Riverton, South Jordan, and Bluffdale fill up fast in March.
